After a two-hour wait on shore to give the thermal breeze time to pick up in the bay surrounding the sunny La Trinité sur Mer in South-West Brittany, the Race Committee for the 36th Spi Ouest France launched the start of the coastal course for the M34s, the other series not due to hit the racetrack until tomorrow.

Pretty much straightaway, the two main protagonists of the 2013 circuit were back in their familiar roles at the head of the fleet at the windward mark.

In the wake of the sailors from Dunkirk, the crew of Groupama 34 sailed a great race, getting back in direct contact with the leader on several occasions, without actually managing to get the upper hand.

As such, after three hours of racing, Daniel Souben and his crew secured a win in the first race offshore of the entrance to the port of La Trinité sur Mer. Groupama 34 bagged second place ahead of VOX SEA.

Hostilities have commenced then and they will continue through until Monday with nearly 500 boats competing on what is a highly technical race zone, though probably one less favourable to sunburn than it was today.
