Wellington turned on perfect conditions for the opening day of the CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Regatta 2010, with racing taking place right in front of the club, it made for a fantastic scene.
On day one the Australian contingent have set themselves up well early in the regatta. Skipper Jordan Reece from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron has made a flying start to his campaign setting the pace amongst all skippers winning 6 races from 6 starts and one race to go to complete his round. Cruising Yacht Club of Australia skipper Will Mackenzie has also made a strong start with 4 wins from 5 starts.
Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club skipper Matt Steven (recently crowned World Junior OK Dinghy Champion) got off to a good start this morning winning his first match before he crossed the start line as opposing Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron skipper Jamie Dawson got black flagged. Steven has completed his round with 5 wins from 7 starts and has to wait till tomorrow to find out where he places.
By the end of the day too much water was taken on by one boat and too long to bail it out meant that the Race Committee boat pulled up the AP over A so everyone has headed home for the day and round robin 1 will be completed tomorrow.
A great day of racing is over. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.
