Wellington turned on a cracker for the finals of the CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Regatta 2010 resulting in a fantastic day for the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. All three RPNYC teams were successful in their respective sail offs. It was a short day on the water, only the minimum number of races was required for both the Final and Petit Finals.

RPNYC skipper Matt Steven who was recently crowned as Junior OK World Dinghy Champion now has another title to add to the list. Steven won the trans – Tasman clash against Cruising Yacht Club of Australia skipper Will Mackenzie in 3 straight races. In the first match Stevens won the start and built a 40 second win in 10 knot warm breeze. In the second Steven beat Mackenzie by 9 seconds after a furious gybing due. Steven covered perfectly to take what was to be an unassailable two-nil lead in series. In the final match a big shift to the left exaggeraed the final result with a 3 minute 17 seconds win, giving Steven the series.

In the sail off for third and fourth, RPNYC skipper Tim Coltman took third place with two consecutive wins beating Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron skipper Jordan Reece.

Josh Porebski prevailed in the fifth and sixth sail off against the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club team skippered by Jason Waterhouse.

It was an intra-club clash as Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron skippers Dan Pooley and Jamie Dawson faced off in the sail-off for seventh and eighth with Pooley taking seventh place over his clubmate.

RC44: Sea Dubai Helmsman is straight in at the deep end

It’s been a tough start for Raimondo Tonelli on the helm on Sea Dubai for the RC 44 season opener with the strong winds experienced over the last two days. He’s had no time to be eased in to his new role of helming the boat in the fleet races. ‘I guess a gentle breeze would have given me an easier introduction although I love strong winds. I don’t enjoy small breezes when I’m sailing and although I’m not used to the RC 44 yet or the way it handles, this initiation will certainly help me to get a good feel for it quickly,’ said Raimondo. Another windy day is expected with rain today for the final day of racing in the Al Maktoum Sailing Trophy and its gusting hard already with dark skies.

The teams scores have been mixed during the fleet racing and Markus Wieser the team tactician said they were just not as fast as the other boats. ‘I think I’m too conscious that Raimondo is new and maybe too cautious with some decisions which we will have to sort out as fast as we can, ‘ said the tactician.

All the boats headed out on the fifth day of racing on time but were told by the race committee to return shortly after as the wind wouldn’t settle down and there were some really big gusts. The first race of the day wasn’t good for Sea Dubai, they got a bad start and reached the top mark in seventh place then downwind they had to avoid another boat and broached. But the second place in the next race of the day was encouraging enough to end the day feeling ok. The bowman, Kazuhiko Sofuku, summed it all up. He probably has the wettest job on the boat in strong winds but was very cheerful. ‘The racing has been great, conditions like this are fantastic, it makes you realize what it’s all about and why you do it especially in Dubai where it’s always nice and warm.’

Saeed Harib, CEO of Dubai International Marine Club and the team CEO proudly presented the Match Racing first place trophy to the Sea Dubai team on behalf of the teams Chairman, Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Tsunami Threat Across the Pacific Ocean categorised as Severe

NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issues Severe Tsunami Threat for the Pacific Ocean islands and surrounding land areas

In addition to the NZ Civil Defence warnings, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is continuing to issue Ocean-wide warnings, as per the one given below on SailRaceWin.

It is always difficult to predict the height of a tsunami wave with great accuracy, since local water depths and coastal configurations can mean that a 2cm wave in one place is over 2 metres or very considerably more elsewhere.

Further, the first wave may not be the largest, and may also be preceded by a considerable lowering of water levels.

In addition to this, seiching may occur (as in Wellington Harbour with the 1855 tsunami), and rapid currents and changes in water level may continue for at least 12 hours after the first tsunami wave comes ashore.

The Indian Ocean December 2004 tsunami was only about 2 metres in height on arrival onshore.

Tsunami Threat to New Zealand Confirmed for Early Morning Sunday 28th February

Confirmation has been received that a tsunami was generated from the 8.8 magnitude quake in Chile. A wave measuring 2.34 metres was measured in Talcahuano, Chile.

The first wave to arrive in New Zealand will be in the areas around Chatham Islands (Waitangi) at approximately 0705 NZDT, Sunday 28 February 2010. The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest. Strong currents and unusual tidal effects may continue for several hours.

Based on preliminary modelling and comparison with historical events the interpretation of the Tsunami Experts Panel is that a marine threat (i.e. threat to beach and small boats) exists for the entire east coasts of the North and South Islands from Puysegur around to Cape Reinga and extending south to Ahipara. Some land threat also exists (i.e. wave heights between 1 and 3 metres) for the Chatham Islands and Banks Peninsula. Wave height refers to maximum water level relevant to the normal sea level at the beach. This does not take tides into account. Based on historical events it is expected that the greatest wave heights will occur between 6 and 12 hours after the initial arrivals.

People in coastal areas should:

1. Stay off beaches
2. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
3. Do not go sightseeing
4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
6. Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities.

The National Crisis Management Centre in Wellington has been activated. MCDEM and scientific advisors are closely monitoring the situation to determine the severity of the threat to New Zealand

BMW Auckland Regatta - First Half Report

Winds gusting over 30 knots tested the competitors in the opening day of the BMW Auckland Regatta Friday and saw one of the hot favourites in the open multihull division capsize.

Frantic Drift, skippered by Olympic sailor Dan Slater with Nathan Handley and two up-and-coming Olympic class sailors Blair Tuke and Peter Burling on board was flipped coming into the finish of the opening race.

The yacht ended upside down in the water. With help from two umpire boats, Frantic Drift was righted again. Nobody was injured and the yacht was soon under tow back to Westhaven.

“Conditions were certainly testing,” said regatta director Ross Markwick of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. “The sailors had their hands full in gusty conditions, but we saw some outstanding displays of seamanship.”

Racing comprised a course from Northern Leading to Eastern Beach, followed by windward leewards.

Sixty yachts in nine divisions are competing in the regatta, which finishes on Sunday.

Tsunami Threat to New Zealand: Civil Defence Warning

The magnitude of the Chile quake has been confirmed as 8.8. A local tsunami has been confirmed with the highest recorded wave measuring 2.2m.

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) and GNS science advisors have been closely monitoring the situation following the above quake to assess any potential tsunami threat to NZ. Based on current information MCDEM has issued a National Warning:Tsunami Threat to NZ. Scientific Advisors confirm a possible marine threat along the east coast of the North Island, South Island and Chatham Islands If a tsunami has been generated, the first wave may arrive in New Zealand in the areas around Chatham Island (Waitangi Side) at approximately 07:05 HRS NZDT 28/02/2010. The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest .Waves may continue for several hours.Current assessment is for a non destructive tsunami for NZ with wave heights at the shore of between 0.2 and 1 metre.

People in coastal areas should:
1. Stay off beaches
2. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
3. NOT go sightseeing
4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
