Colin Mullins Regatta: Tiller in 3rd place after Day 1

Langford and Gilmour Turn up the Heat on Day One

by John Roberson

Skippers Kyle Langford and David Gilmour are setting up a trans-Australia showdown in the Colin Mullins Regatta, the selection series for the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta. Langford and his crew representing Sydney’s Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and Perth skipper David Gilmour of the host club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, both have five wins and one loss at the end of the first day’s racing.

It was only an “unforced error” by the Langford crew that prevented them going through the day undefeated, when they missed a start which incurred a penalty, although they got ahead of their opponent, New Zealand’s William Tiller, they were unable to complete their penalty and stay ahead. A philosophical Langford commented, “we were a bit too laid back, and didn’t realize we were supposed to be starting.”

David Gilmour’s only loss was to Robert Gibbs from rival Swan River club, the Royal Perth Yacht Club. In third place after the first day’s racing is William Tiller.

A shifty south easterly wind made conditions difficult for the crews, and with the mercury nudging 35c, it was a long hot day afloat. Perhaps it was being unaccustomed to the heat that affected the performance of the three northern hemisphere crews who are contesting the event.

Between Denmark’s Martin Boidin, Briton Mark Lees and Kosaku Yoshida of Japan, they only scored one point, from 14 races, and that went to the Dane, with a win over Mark Lees.

With three skippers, who are not contesting this event, having already pre-qualified, there are seven places available in the Warren Jones Regatta that starts on Monday 1st February. The final of the Colin Mullins Regatta will be sailed on Saturday evening.
