After more than two months of stand-by for the Trophée Jules Verne attempt, things seems to be firming up for the Maxi Banque Populaire V. Tuesday, at 12H00, the multihull and her crew went to Code Orange, meaning that a start on the record attempt is likely within the next 48 to 72 hours.
If the elements seem at last to decide to give satisfaction to the Team Banque Populaire, the uncertainty concerning a start remains with Pascal Bidégorry and his men, as the skipper explained: " It is possible that an opportunity will present itself during the day on Friday for a departure, but the situation is still quite unstable. We have examined this possible window for several days, but it hasn't moved much; we have been examining it closely and we will see if things develop in our favour. There should be other opportunities next week; we are therefore very vigilant. It is highly likely that things won't be precise enough until the last minute. "
Marcel van Triest, who is responsible for the route to be taken by the Maxi Banque Populaire V, also reflects on this change of code and the forecast window that is opening up: "Today we decided to change to Code Orange because there is certainly a weather window, but we aren't sure whether to seize this as it is remains uncertain as yet. If it develops, it would open the opportunity for a good attempt at the Trophée Jules Verne. What can be complicated with the analysis forecast is that it is only a question of probability and that the forward visibilities sometimes are very limited. Today, I have more visibility on the Atlantic South in a week than on Brest this Friday. Therefore we wait to see if this becomes more precise. We will have, I hope, a better idea tonight or tomorrow."
This is a Team that is held on a knife edge, evaluating minutely all the opportunities. What is certain today is that Pascal Bidégorry and his team of 12 men are only waiting for one thing: to make the attempt and conquer the Trophée Jules Verne.
