Balboa Yacht Club’s 43nd annual Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship will take place July 14th-19th, 2009. The event features the best young match racing talent from all over the world including teams this year from New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. US entrants will include last year’s winner, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, with strong challenges expected from all of the teams. Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will have two teams, one a coed team and the other with all girls. A first time entry from Ireland and another from Bermuda will add to the international flavor of the event.

Racing will take place in the ocean near the Newport Pier in the afternoons from Wednesday, July 15 through Sunday, July 19. The format of two boats racing against each other, with each team of three racing against every other team during each of the round robins, provides observers with continuous competition to watch. The talented racers with experience in match racing demonstrate a variety of tactics as they race around marks.
