LIVESPORT TELECOM New Zealand Women's Match Racing: Update #2

by SailRaceWin

A very tight match between the two Kiwi (RNZYS) teams - Hazard and Osborne - in the Olympic training squad - in Round Robin 2 Flight 7.

The last two matches of the last flight of Round Robin 2 promise to be very interesting. These are Lehtinen vs. Osborne (fighting for the last place in the semi-finals) followed by Souter vs. Pellew - the two Aussies (bothe from RPAYC) at the top of the table, who are going for the Australian slot for the Olympics in Weymouth in 2012.

Pellew is the married name of Katie Spithill, sister to the wining helmsman of the 33rd America's Cup, James Spithill. Souter crewed for Pellew before moving to helm her own boat. Souter is the current Women's World Match Racing Champion, having gained the title in Scandinavia last year. Pellew has Australian Olympic development squad helm Lucinda Whitty crewing for her. The previous weekend both Souter and Pellew crewed for Whitty, who won the Marinassess Women’s Match Racing Regatta at the CYCA in Sydney.

Of the two Kiwi Olympic training squad teams, Osborne has the older crew, including Carla Holgate, daughter of Harold Bennett. Hazard's team includes former top Optimist sailor Susannah Pyatt on the bow. Susannah's father trialed for the Olympics in the Soling in the UK in the early 1990s, and has plenty of experience in match racing. Sara Winther's crew is composed of Laser Radial sailors.

Finnish sailor Silja Lehtinen, who has competed in this event before, brought just one crew from Finland with her, and so has two locals completing her crew.
