Abu Dhabi: one year to go
by Volvo Ocean Race media
New Year celebrations of 2012 will mark the end of leg 2 with the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet into Abu Dhabi, the second stopover for the race and the first Middle Eastern port in the history of the event.
With less than a year to go to the opening of the Abu Dhabi Race Village, Heather Sherer, Director of Operations at Volvo Ocean Race and former Head of logistic operations for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, gives an overview of progress on preparations for the future stopover, in the video above.
Construction is underway on the new venue for the Volvo Ocean Race race village and logistics specialist DHL, an integral part of the operation of the race, is already conducting site visits for the planning and organisation of each of the stopovers.
Over the last few years the UAE has become the sporting capital of the Middle East, staging prestigious international sporting events such as the A1 Grand Prix in Dubai, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and the Red Bull Air Race in Abu Dhabi, while Qatar has been chosen to be the host city for the World Cup in 2022.
