CentrePort Wellington International Youth Match Racing Championships 2010

by Matt Chan

The CentrePort Wellington International Youth Match Racing Championships 2010 are being held from the 23-27 February. Racing takes place on Lambton Harbour right in front of the Central Business District.

This year we have 3 teams from the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. One is skippered by Matt Steven who just last week placed 3rd overall in the OK Dinghy World Champs and was crowned the World Junior OK Dinghy Champion. The second local team is skippered by Josh Porebski who has just finished 2nd in the New Zealnd 2010 ISAF Youth World Champs selection trials in the Laser class. Team three is skippered by Tim Coltman, a member of the 2nd placed team in the Hardy Cup sailed out of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, who's looking forward to taking the tiller instead of the main.

Two teams have been entered by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron skippered by Dan Pooley and Jamie Dawson. Both sailors are new names in the skippering role on the Trans Tasman circuit but you can rest assured that they will be will drilled as a result of their time at the squadron's youth programme.

There's a strong Aussie contingent this year with teams from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. Jordan Reece is back skippering the team from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron after a strong campaign in the Hardy Cup. New faces at the CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Regatta include Jason Waterhouse skipper of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Will Mackenzie skipper of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's team.
