Sunburst Nationals at Heretaunga

by Jodie Bakewell-White

The 2010 Sunburst Nationals sailed at the Heretaunga Boating Club on Wellington Anniversary weekend were won by Starling sailors Sam McKenzie and Anita Trudgen representing the Muritai Yacht Club.

Trailing by one point after day one of racing they took the lead after the 6th race and held on in the 7th and final race to finish with 16 points, ahead of the next 4 crews on 20, 21, 22 and 25 points.

With the first day of racing cancelled due to strong southerly winds and the forecast for the third day being doubtful, 5 races were held in light to moderate winds on the second day to ensure a series completion.

Two wins on the final day by reigning champion Brett Linton, sailing with daughter Alice, saw them finish second. Jake and Ben Hawker were rewarded for their journey from Dunedin with third place.

Competitors were entertained at lunchtime on Day 1 of racing with pods of Dusky and Bottlenose dolphins performing fishing manoeuvres 150 metres in front of the yacht club.
