WMRT: BlackMatch at the right end of leaderboard after day 2 of Match Race Germany

by David Swete

Day 2 was another light and shifty day of racing here in Germany and despite a hiccup against Mathieu Richard, who was the winner of the Tour opener in Marseille, we had victories over Peter Gilmour, Ian Ainslie and Magnus Holmberg that have set us up for a good shot at making the quarterfinals.

‘Shifty’ was the word to describe most of today’s action, however this was perhaps an understatement in our race against former world champion Magnus Holmberg. Magnus is sailing with an all Kiwi crew for this regatta, teaming up with the Waka Racing boys and we had a very interesting race. Although we held the lead throughout, massive windshifts made it a very stressful race and it was anyones game up until the final run.

Currently we are alongside 3 teams who have only had two losses, with Ian Williams clear in front having only suffered a one loss. It is looking like we will need only one more win from our 4 remaining matches to proceed through, however with matches tomorrow against Torvar Mirsky, Ian Williams, Jesper Radich and Paolo Cian it will still be a tough ask.
