Brasil 1, the event management company behind the 2005-06 Volvo Ocean Race entry of the same name, and the local host of this current stopover in Rio de Janeiro, went public Wednesday night with its intention to enter the next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.
Lars Grael, a double Olympic Bronze medallist in the Tornado Class (1988, 1996), has been named as the project leader.
"We recently had a meeting between potential sponsors, Alan Adler, myself and some other sailors and we realised that it would be good to confirm a new Brazilian team for the Volvo Ocean Race," Grael said. "We believe we have strong sponsors, good human resources and the experience of Brasil 1 to build on, so we decided to launch the challenge now.
"It's too early to confirm about people involved and designers and things like that. But we will have Alan Adler on board, who has a lot of capability along with his experience as a former Star sailor. We're optimistic about our chances."
This announcement follows a presentation on Sunday by Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad where the first details of the next edition of the race were announced, along with the process going forward for announcing the rules and route of the 2011-12 edition of the race.
Brasil 1 is the first team to declare its intentions for the next Volvo Ocean Race.
