The fleet started just off the Race Village at Marina de Gloria. They then headed down to sail round a mark off Sugarloaf Mountain. Back to the start, past Sugarloaf again and then round a mark of Copacabana Beach.

The next scoring mark will be Ilha de Fernando de Noronha (same mark as Leg 1) on the way up to Boston.

Racing started on time on Guanabara Bay with Telefonica Black and PUMA off to a quick start. There's a good sea breeze blowing on the bay but it's very gusty and shifty.

As they leave Guanabara Bay, Telefonica Black is in the lead, with Ericsson 4, PUMA and Telefonica Blue in second, third and fourth behind. Green Dragon and then Ericsson 3, who had to send a man up the mast early on in the race, are next. Delta Lloyd is a long way behind the other boats.
