The PUMA Ocean Racing team is currently engaged in a tough battle as they begin to close on Boston, USA, the finish of the sixth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09. With 1,187 miles to go to the finish line, just 37 miles separate first to fourth place. The PUMA team, led by American Skipper Ken Read, is striving hard for a podium finish into Boston, the team’s unoffficial home.
Not for the first time in this epic race, PUMA’s il mostro is locked in battle with the two Ericsson boats, Ericsson 3 and Ericsson 4. Having been within sight of these close rivals for the majority of the 4,900 nautical mile leg from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the PUMA team are squeezing every inch of speed out of il mostro (‘the monster’) in order to beat them to Boston. With over a thousand miles to go, the team still have some big tactical decisions ahead of them. The leading pack is expected to arrive in Boston this Sunday, April 26th, where the city, in which one of PUMA’s headquarters are based, will welcome the team with open arms.
