Groupe Bel returned to the water today, but here is some earlier news for the 2013 season...

Groupe Bel's skipper has started 2013 with energy to spare, working relentlessly in preparing the season. After eight years spent with Bel's employees, the program will come to an end at the end of June as planned. Kito will return to the helm of the red monohull in spring, but must find new partners to take on his next challenges. A review of the situation with Kito.
Kito, what is the latest news of Groupe Bel?
“The boat is safely waiting in the Cascais marina (Lisbon) before returning by truck. This special transportation through three countries, Portugal, Spain and France, will take nearly two weeks during January and its destination will be a boat yard in Brittany where Groupe Bel will be repaired. The good news is that the surveys carried out with the architects have not revealed any further damage than that observed and Groupe Bel will be ready to sail as of April.”
What is your program for Groupe Bel in 2013?
“The partnership with Bel continues until the end of June. We will therefore have the huge pleasure of seeing our beautiful red boat again in the events this spring. We must still fix a calendar but, in principle, we should sail on the Atlantic shoreline and in the Mediterranean. Then, I will consider what follows by actively looking for new partners. I know that there is a fine future for this boat in the circuit events.”
A word for the Bel employees?
“I would like to thank them for their absolutely magical enthusiasm, these last eight years, and their unfailing support which has touched me deeply. And it is not over yet. We still have an adventure to share until June. Last but not least, it is the season to wish you all a great year in 2013!”
The Vendée Globe as seen by Kito
As a keen racer, Groupe Bel’s skipper has been following this 7th Vendée Globe closely, and here are his impressions:
“After a stormy start to the race, which unfortunately brought with it its load of retirements, it has been more than a month since any major problems have occurred and this is already a good thing, particularly since the skippers are sailing in dangerous regions.
One can only be impressed by the pace set by Armel (Le Cléac’h) and François (Gabart) leading the race. They are a pair of fierce competitors. Admittedly, the boats are capable of sailing much faster, but you still need to be able to sail them. On board, it is noisy, violent, wet, and very testing. To be at close quarters all the time means never letting go, but you also need to stay careful and ensure safety.
And behind it’s the same, each sailor sticks to the next to keep the pace. Even the older boats like Hugo Boss (Alex Thomson) or Synerciel (Jean Le Cam) continue to attack, which shows that the Vendée Globe relies on the sailors more than the boats.”

Groupe Bel mis à l'eau à Port-la-Forêt !
Kito de Pavant reprend la mer aux commandes du monocoque Groupe Bel au top de sa forme. Entièrement réparée depuis ses malheurs sur le Vendée Globe, la coque rouge estampillée du sourire de La vache qui rit® a été mise à l'eau à Port-la-Forêt (Bretagne). Rééquipé dans le moindre détail, Groupe Bel doit effectuer quelques navigations de réglages avant de débuter un joli programme entre régates et record.

Nouvel outrigger et nouvelle cadène bâbord (pièces qui tiennent le mât), nouveau bout-dehors à l'avant et près de trois mètres de coque greffés sur le flanc gauche, Groupe Bel est aujourd'hui comme neuf ! "Pour Bel, mon équipe et ceux qui vivent ce projet depuis huit ans, c'est une immense satisfaction de retrouver notre beau bateau en parfait état,'' déclare le skipper dont on entend la joie dans la voix. "Je tiens à remercier l'équipe du chantier CDK qui a réalisé un travail impeccable. Nous avons maintenant hâte de retrouver le plaisir de la régate et les sensations fantastiques à bord de cet engin fabuleux."
De Belles Perspectives
D'ici fin juin, date à laquelle le programme de sponsoring voile de Bel prend fin, le skipper de Groupe Bel participe au Grand Prix Guyader de Douarnenez (3-6 mai), à la remise des prix du Vendée Globe aux Sables d'Olonne (11 mai) ainsi qu'à la Giraglia Rolex Cup (Saint-Tropez-San Remo, Italie, 9-16 juin). Enfin, "si un bon coup de Mistral se lève," Kito aimerait aussi tenter d'améliorer son propre record de la traversée de la Méditerranée en monocoque et en solitaire entre Marseille et Carthage en Tunisie (1j 21h20').

Fêtes de la mer et des marins
Au programme, trois fêtes maritimes, deux en Atlantique et une en Méditerranée. "Nous participons avec plaisir au Grand Prix Guyader qui réunit des voiliers de toutes tailles dont certains concurrents du Vendée Globe mais aussi des amoureux du Kite Surf ou du Stand Up Paddle, dans la splendide baie de Douarnenez," précise Kito qui a participé à l'épreuve en 2008. "Groupe Bel sera ensuite convoyé vers Port Camargue avec un stop possible aux Sables d'Olonne en fonction de la météo pour la remise des prix du Vendée Globe qui est un beau moment de partage avec le public vendéen. Avec ou sans bateau, j'y serai en tout cas !
Et enfin, troisième rendez-vous qui nous tenait à cœur avec Bel : la Giraglia Rolex Cup et son rassemblement de plus de 200 voiliers d'exception," se réjouit le Méditerranéen. "Une épreuve entre Saint-Tropez, la Corse et San Remo qui mêle parfaitement compétition et plaisir. Nous avions réalisé une jolie performance en 2009 (7e temps réel), s'aligner de nouveau est une parfaite manière de conclure le programme avec Bel, d'autant que la grande course arrive en Italie, pas loin de là où le bateau est né en 2007."
Record à saisir
Kito et Groupe Bel seront également en stand-by à Port Camargue fin mai-début juin. "Nous regarderons attentivement la météo entre Marseille et Carthage afin de saisir toute opportunité de record en solitaire. L'idée est de retrouver l'adrénaline du solo dont j'ai été privé sur le Vendée Globe et d'améliorer le temps de référence que nous avions établi avec Groupe Bel en 2009."
