After rounding off the qualifiers in second place, the Groupama crew has, as predicted, been marking time today in a much steadier breeze. Still novices in the Nacra 17 series, Franck Cammas and Sophie de Turckheim will have their work cut out if they are going to be able to rival the top crews, and the French in particular, as the wind and the seas pick up.
Since the start of the week, the days of Wednesday and Thursday were forecast to be rather unfavourable for the French crew. With the waking of the wind gods, the oracles have been confirmed: Franck and Sophie are, somewhat logically, not up to par in the breezy conditions.
There are several explanations for this: "Franck and I have only done very little sailing together. Though that's not a big issue in the light to medium breeze, where our tactics make up for that, it is a real handicap on a day like today. We can't find the speed and we lose time in the manoeuvres", Sophie explains on their return to dock.
Suffering from a back injury, the Laser champion isn't the kind to complain. Aware of the seriousness of her sacrum fracture though, she headed out this morning with a certain amount of apprehension: "It would be really silly to make the injury worse as that would prevent us from keeping up with the training programme Franck and the French Team set up for us".
Suffice to say that we were worried when we saw her fall in the water after the wire broke and then capsize in the last race of the day. However, the minute she was back on board, she was out on the wire again to complete the race, even though it was only about securing one of the last places by then.
Questioned about the day's performances, helmsman Franck replied openly: "We were all too aware when we headed out this morning that it was going to be tough. We're really lacking training compared with the other crews. As such we're not as fast, we lose a lot of time in the mark roundings and in the manoeuvres. What's good though is seeing the superb performances by the other French crews in these types of conditions. By sailing with them, we're going to learn a great deal".
Still positive, Franck and Sophie know that there is a long way to go before Rio and there will be a number of obstacles along the way. However, this is why they're here too: to make progress and to surpass themselves. Let's not forget the pleasure of sailing downwind at over twenty knots in the breeze against the top international crews. You just need to see the smiles lighting up the faces of the sailors on their return to shore to convince yourself of that.
As regards the race, we note the very fine performances by the Swiss crew who, without an unfortunate capsize 100 metres from the finish line on the last race, would be topping the provisional leaderboard tonight. A special mention too for the French team of Audrey Ogereau and Matthieu Vandame who bagged the last two races and finally the consistency prize goes to Billy Besson and Marie Riou, who secured the third step of the podium.

Après avoir conclu les phases de qualification en deuxième position, l'équipage Groupama a, comme prévu, marqué le pas aujourd'hui dans un vent nettement plus soutenu. Encore novices dans la série des Nacra 17, Franck Cammas et Sophie de Turckheim ont encore beaucoup de travail dans leurs étraves avant de pouvoir rivaliser avec les meilleurs équipages, notamment français, quand le vent et la mer se lèvent.
Depuis le début de la semaine, les journées de mercredi et jeudi s'annonçaient comme peu favorables au jeune équipage tricolore. Eole ayant confirmé son réveil, les oracles ont été confirmés : Franck et Sophie ne sont logiquement pas au niveau dans la brise.
A cela, plusieurs explications : « Nous n'avons que très peu navigué ensemble avec Franck. Si ce n'est pas très gênant dans le vent faible à médium où l'on compense par notre tactique, c'est par contre très handicapant dans une journée comme celle d'aujourd'hui. Nous ne trouvons pas la vitesse et nous perdons du temps dans les manoeuvres » analyse Sophie de retour à terre.
Blessée au dos, la championne de Laser n'est pas du genre à se plaindre. Mais consciente du sérieux de sa fracture du Sacrum, elle partait ce matin avec une certaine appréhension : « Ce serait trop bête d'aggraver la blessure car cela ne nous permettrait pas de tenir le programme d'entraînements que nous nous sommes fixés avec Franck et l'Equipe de France ».
Autant dire que nous nous sommes inquiétés lorsque nous l'avons vu tomber à l'eau suite à la rupture de son câble de trapèze puis chavirer dans la dernière manche du jour. Pourtant, à peine remonté à bord, elle est ressortie au trapèze pour finir la manche, même dans les dernières places.
Interrogé sur les performances de la journée, Franck le barreur ne se voilait pas la face : « Nous savions très bien en partant ce matin que la journée allait être difficile. Nous manquons terriblement d'entraînement par rapport aux autres équipages. Nous sommes donc moins rapides, perdons du temps dans les passages de marques et dans les manoeuvres. Mais ce qui est bien, c'est de voir les super performances des autres équipages français dans ce type de temps. En navigant avec eux, nous allons beaucoup apprendre ».
Toujours positifs, Franck et Sophie savent que la route vers Rio est encore longue et sera semée d'embuches. Mais c'est aussi pour cela qu'ils y vont : progresser, se dépasser. Sans oublier le bonheur de naviguer à plus de vingt noeuds au portant dans la brise face aux meilleurs équipages internationaux. Il n'était qu'à voir le sourire qui illuminait les visages des marins à leur retour de mer pour s'en convaincre.
Coté course, on notera les très belles performances de l'équipage Suisse qui, sans un malheureux dessalage à 100 mètres de la ligne d'arrivée de la dernière manche, occuperait la tête du classement provisoire. Mention spéciale aux français Audrey Ogereau et Matthieu Vandame qui claquent les deux dernières manches et enfin le prix de la régularité est décerné à Billy Besson et Marie Riou qui sont sur la troisième marche du podium.
