Timaru Yacht & Powerboat Club attracted an impressive 147 entries for the Laser National Championships sailed over four days and wrapping up on January 26th. Included within the event were titles for Open Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, Laser Masters and Radial Masters.
Timaru last hosted the Laser Nationals 31 years ago when Russell Coutts won the Open fleet. In 2010 it was Olympian Andrew Murdoch who took the title. This year’s youngest competitor was a 12 year old in the 4.7 and the eldest reportedly 70+ years old.
Mike Knowsley of the New Zealand Laser Association combined competing in the Laser Radial Masters fleet, along with writing reports on racing published on the New Zealand Laser Association website.
