It's today that Franck Cammas and teammate Sophie de Turckheim will be doing battle for the first time with the top international Nacra 17 crews in the context of the World Sailing Cup in Hyères, formerly referred to as the Semaine Pré Olympique (Pre-Olympic Week). After two weeks of strenuous training on the race zone in Hyères, they are pretty keen for hostilities to commence.
As announced during the conference on 7 December 2012, Franck Cammas is tackling his first international competition, giving shape to the announcement of his bid for Olympic gold.
In the history of Olympic sailing, it's rather unusual to witness the arrival of a forty-year old rookie. In fact it must be pretty exceptional. However, it'll take more than this to ruffle Franck Cammas.
Tempted by the Olympic adventure following Groupama 4's victory in the Volvo Ocean Race, the French skipper quickly set to work to give himself a chance to represent France at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.
Having teamed up with the World No.2 in Laser, Sophie de Turckheim, Franck began training at the Ecole Nationale de Voile (National Sailing School) in Quiberon before his one-design Nacra 17 catamaran had even been delivered. Following that up with some sailing around the bay of Quiberon in Brittany then La Grande Motte in southern France, under the leadership of Franck Citeau from the Centre d'Entrainement Méditerranéen (Mediterranean Training Centre), the mixed crew has learnt how to handle a small catamaran, which flies along with its curved daggerboards, that play the role of foils the minute the wind picks up a bit.
Like their French teammates, Franck and Sophie alternate between high-speed tacks and vertiginous bow burying: "As soon as there are quite big seas or chop, it's hard to keep the boat balanced. That's how Sophie hurt her back as the boat's bows ploughed quite violently into a wave a couple of weeks ago", admitted the Groupama skipper.
Based in Hyères for nearly three weeks, the native of nearby Aix en Provence has been champing at the bit a little as he waits for his crewmate to get back on her feet. "I hope there won't be too much wind, as she's still got back trouble. She's incredibly motivated though and she's not the kind to complain", continues Franck.
It has to be said though that this incident, to which sessions with a Physio have added to what is already a busy schedule, will have somewhat slowed the learning curve of this new crew.
No matter though: "We're here to learn to sail together and discover the Nacra 17. We're also here to discover our rivals. I'm familiar with some, like Iker Martinez, who recently participated in the Princess Sophia Trophy in Spain. When I look at his result (18th), and take into account the fact that he's very familiar with the Olympic circuit after securing a gold medal in the 49er, that gives you an idea of the general standard."
This standard shouldn't embarrass the French crews though, who managed to show what they were made of with third place for Vaireaux - Audinet and fourth for Besson - Riou, behind two Dutch crews.
It now remains to be seen how this new Groupama crew will fare when racing against the top international crews.

C'est aujourd'hui que Franck Cammas et sa coéquipière Sophie de Turkheim vont se confronter pour la première fois aux meilleurs équipages internationaux en Nacra 17 dans le cadre de la World Sailing Cup de Hyères, précédemment dénommée Semaine Pré Olympique. Après deux semaines d'entrainements acharnés sur le plan d'eau de Hyères, ils attendent avec une certaine impatience le début des hostilités.
Comme annoncé lors de la conférence du 7 décembre dernier, Franck Cammas aborde une première compétition internationale qui concrétise son annonce de conquête de l'or olympique.
Dans les annales de la voile olympique, il n'est pas commun d'assister à l'arrivée d'un bizuth de quarante ans. Ce doit même être exceptionnel. Mais ce n'est pas ce genre de qualificatif qui dérange Franck Cammas.
Tenté par l'aventure olympique au lendemain de la victoire de Groupama 4 dans la Volvo Ocean Race, le skipper tricolore s'est rapidement mis au travail pour se donner une chance de représenter la France aux Jeux Olympiques de Rio en 2016.
Associé à la vice-championne du monde de Laser Sophie de Turckheim, Franck a commencé les entrainements à l'Ecole Nationale de Voile de Quiberon avant même d'être livré de son catamaran monotype Nacra 17. Enchaînant les navigations en baie de Quiberon puis à la Grande Motte sous la direction de Franck Citeau du Centre d'Entrainement Méditerranéen, l'équipage mixte a découvert le maniement de ce petit catamaran qui vole grâce à ses dérives courbes qui jouent le rôle de foils dès que le vent monte un peu.
A l'instar de leurs camarades d'équipe de France, France et Sophie alternent bords à haute et vitesse et plantés vertigineux : « Dès qu'il y a de la mer ou du clapot, le bateau est difficile à garder en équilibre. C'est comme cela que Sophie s'est fait mal au dos lors d'un planté assez violent il y a deux semaines » nous confiait le skipper Groupama.
Basé à Hyères depuis près de trois semaines, le natif d'Aix en Provence ronge un peu son frein en attendant que son équipière soit remise sur pieds ; « J'espère qu'il n'y aura pas trop de vent car elle souffre encore du dos. Mais bon, elle est super motivée et elle n'est pas du genre à se plaindre » poursuit Franck.
Reste tout de même que cet incident, auquel s'ajoute un emploi du temps chargé pour cause d'études de Kiné, aura quelque peu freiné la courbe d'apprentissage de ce nouvel équipage.
Mais qu'importe : « Nous sommes là pour apprendre à naviguer ensemble, à découvrir le Nacra 17. On va aussi découvrir nos concurrents. J'en connais certains comme Iker Martinez qui a récemment participé au Trophée Princess Sophia en Espagne. Quand je vois son résultat (18ème) alors qu'il connaît super bien l'olympisme pour avoir déjà été médaillé d'or en Forty Niner, ça donne une idée du niveau général ».
Un niveau qui ne doit pourtant pas faire rougir les équipages français qui y ont montré leur potentiel avec les places de troisième de Vaireaux - Audinet et de quatrième de Besson -Riou derrière deux équipages néerlandais.
Reste maintenant à voir comment ce nouvel équipage Groupama se comportera en course face aux meilleurs équipages internationaux.
