OK Dinghy World Champion, Karl Purdie (pictured left) was named Wellington’s Sportsman of the Year at the Wellington Sports Awards in Wellington on Thursday June 3rd.
Purdie was named over fellow nominees Reyon Kay (Speed skating), Mark Paston (football), and Peter Taylor (rowing).
Purdie from Wellington wears the OK Dinghy World Champion crown once more after winning the World Championship Regatta contested in Wellington in February this year.
Purdie, who won the title in 2008 and silver in 2009, had a tough battle on his hands over the five days of racing hosted by Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, but came out on top with a winning margin of 13 points.
