New South Wales A-Cat Championships Day One: Not Victorian!

by Julian Jenkins

Brad Collett is leading the NSW titles, sailed out of the Kurnwell Catamaran Club, after the first day of racing after winning the second and third races. Several sailors are close behind including, Steve Brewin, the favourite and winner of the first race, Steve Brayshaw and Scott Anderson, who won the fourth and final race of the day.

Conditions were dramatically different from last weekend's Victorian State Titles, with a number of rain squalls crossing the course. The first race was subject to a brief postponement due to a storm cell with winds gusting above 25kts and heavy rain reducing visibility.

Once racing was underway, the conditions remained tricky to sail well, despite average wind strength remaining between 15 and 20kts through the day, the wind was very inconsistent, with many changes in the lead as different competitors were able to take advantage of specific gusts.

Note from SailRaceWin: Steve Brewin, a notable absentee at last weekend's Victorian Championships, has returned after illness this weekend. Another notable absentee, from both weekends, Darren Bundock, has been spending time with a recent arrival - Kyle Nico Bundock - in the Netherlands. Father, mother and baby are reported to be doing well! Meanwhile, there is no repeat this weekend of the influx of Glenn Ashby's America's Cup friends, as the AC sailors are now trying out new toys of their own (AC45 wing-sail cats) across the Ditch.
